Jane Austen for Teachers is the Jane Austen Collaborative's digital humanities outreach program for PreK-12 teachers. We offer an immersive, collaborative, and project-based learning experience for educators who want to learn more about incorporating digital humanities projects into the classroom. Teacher fellows will attend JASP 2023 with some teacher-centered bonuses! Fellows will meet before and during JASP to engage in teacher-centered discussions inspired by the program. Afterwards, teacher fellows will collaborate with program directors and digital humanities experts to investigate practical digital teaching tools and begin to draft their own teaching resources, tailored to their own classroom needs.

In partnership with UNC-Chapel Hill's Media & Design Center and the National Humanities Center, Jane Austen for Teachers provides a community-based support system for teachers who want to combine their passion for the humanities with practical professional development in digital tools. Teacher fellows will leave with fluency in at least two new digital humanities tools, the opportunity to publish a collaborative digital project, and a draft lesson arc that incorporates digital tools into their classrooms.

Jane Austen for Teachers will come together throughout JASP 2023, "Austen's Teenage Writings," to build a tight-knit, collaborative group of fellow teacher-learners. With the support of JASP for Teachers program directors, fellows will experiment with digital tools to create a lesson arc that reflects both the joy of working in the humanities and the power of digital pedagogies.

Before JASP

Teacher fellows will come together virtually to meet fellow educators, discuss goals, and get excited for this year's programming! As a teacher-centered program, we are excited to hear from you about what you want to get out of this year's Jane Austen for Teachers.

During JASP

Teacher fellows will participate in all four days of the 2023 Jane Austen Summer Program, which runs from June 15-18 in Chapel Hill, NC. Across the symposium, teachers will meet to discuss your evolving interests and the ways in which you envision getting to use Jane Austen (and her juvenile writings!) in the classroom.

After JASP

Following the four days of JASP 2023, "Austen's Teenaged Writings," our teacher fellows are funded to stay through June 20 to participate together in digital humanities and pedagogy workshops and to discuss, experiment, and engage with one another as a community. Expanding on the ideas that most inspired you during JASP, Jane Austen for Teachers invites attendees to begin creating teaching tools that can work for you in your classroom.

Stay Tuned for Jane Austen for Teachers Digital Tools!

On June 20, 2022, teacher fellows trained with UNC librarians, National Humanities Center educators, and Jane Austen for Teachers directors to learn, practice, + play with the digital tools highlighted by the JASP+ team.

During Jane Austen for Teachers, teacher fellows will work together in a dynamic, collaborative, small-group setting to develop digital projects + discuss how you might use these tools in your own classroom.

Teacher fellows  have the opportunity
for their projects  t
o be published by
Jane Austen for Teachers and the

National Center for the Humanities.

Jane Austen for Teachers will feature at least 2 digital tools that facilitate engaging, joyous, and exploratory humanities instruction! Teacher fellows will experiment with Wordpress and other technologies that will help your students find ways to publish their own writings. UNC librarians will lead professional development sessions for each of the programs. Afterwards, JASP+ teacher fellows will have time to experiment with these tools in collaborative, supportive lab spaces. Teacher fellows have the freedom to practice, play, and test the programs’ usefulness for their individual teaching needs.
